Once we had understood the concept
of EU and how it works the question is: How are we going to explain the
benefits of being a european citizen to the students in secondary level? This is not an easy
topic for us, and taking into account that they are not so young and very
different people concerning cognitive levels, we thought that they should work
with us to make themselves understand it. We just have to give them the keys.
Then our problem is how to give them the keys in an attractive, fun and easy
way to make them get interested in the topic. Having done lots of drafts and thinking, we reached the
following conclusion: what everybody
likes and is able to do is PLAYING!!!!
So we are going to get across
our ideas by means of playing. Our plan is making a team game in which the six
groups in each class are going to represent the "first" six countries
that formed the EU after the second World War. These groups will have to find a
key word by overcoming different obstacles, with this key word different
obstacles, with this word key they will be able to open a treasure. What will
they find inside them? They will find a card where a benefit of being a
European citizen will be written. What will they have to do with it? They will
have to explain their classmates their benefits and we will make a common mural
with them to hang it in their classroom. Our objective with this activity is:
fisrtly to teach the students that learning together is fun, secondly that
being members of the EU is worthy for us and we, as teenagers should know what
is it. We also want to show them,by making the final mural, that by means of working
in smalls groups with a little bit of information, the whole class will be able
to learn lots of things about the UE, just with the union of all our knowledge.
We hope you like the idea, follow
us!!
